Getting Started
Getting Started
We're going to break down how to get started in 3 simple steps
- Decide on Forge or Fabric
- Downloading the Modpack or individual mods
- Basic play walkthrough
Forge or Fabric
The age old question- it depends. First, check if your favorite mod, modpack, or server is exclusively available for one or the other and that should help you decide easily.
If your PC struggles to run a few browser tabs, you should probably use Fabric as it's significantly more optimized.
If you prefer overall amount content, Forge still has Fabric beat by total available mods- for now, as more and more mods are making Fabric variants and/or other creators are creating alternatives.
It's ultimately up to you to decide, there is no wrong answer. We suspect within another year, Fabric should have caught up on the remaining missing pieces of mods. We support both, and we will continue supporting both so long as Cobblemon supports both.
Modpacks
We highly recommend you play with a modpack. These days mods require other mods- specific versions even, so that they don't have to reinvent the same wheel that's been coded 100x before. It's a massive time saver for developers. Rather than chasing specific versions of 10+ mods down each time there's an update, a modpack will handle all of that for you with a press of a button. Plus, you'll be notified when there's an update available.
We recommend getting your modpack from Modrinth- it's a new service developed by the community for the community. We're also available on CurseForge and Technic if you prefer either of them.
- Modrinth - Download the Modrinth App, search Generations under the Modpacks tab, and hit install. Now, you're ready to play!
- CurseForge - Download the CurseForge Launcher, search Generations under the Modpacks tab, and hit install. Now, you're ready to play!
- Technic - Download the Technic Launcher, search Generations under the Modpacks tab, and hit install. Now, you're ready to play!
Minecraft Launcher
Prefer to install manually and play on the Minecraft Launcher? You can grab a list of all the required mods and links to specific versions required on our Downloads page.
Playing
- If you're playing on a singleplayer server, we highly recommend you enable the Bonus Chest on world creation to obtain some extra items that will help you get started. If you're playing on a server, it's very likely you'll receive a bundle of items on first join as part of a first join kit.
- When you first join your singleplayer world or server, you'll be prompted to select a starter Pokemon when you press the M key by default
- After selecting your starter Pokemon, press the R key to send out your Pokemon. You can press the same R key to retrieve the Pokemon back to their PokeBall
- Craft some Poke Balls if you don't have any
- Initiate a battle with a low-level Pokemon by pressing R while looking at a wild Pokemon to throw your Pokemon at them, then capture them
- Now you have two Pokemon! You can press the UP and DOWN arrow keys, by default, to switch between your selected Party Pokemon and press R to send out or retrieve specific ones
- You can press M at any time to open your Pokemon Menu screen, you can view your Pokemon's stats, learn new moves, switch their order around, and initiate evolutions from this screen
- Craft a PC so you can better manage multiple Pokemon and a Healer to recover from battles quicker- but your Pokemon will slowly gain health over time as well.
- Congratulations, you've learned the basics! Now, explore and discover all kinds of secrets out there such as...
- Summoning Legendaries
- Decorating your homes or collecting battle items with any of the 2,000+ Blocks and Items added in Generations
